Buscemi Museum

The town of Buscemi, perched on a hill a few kilometres from Palazzolo, possesses a singular and interesting museum, I Luoghi del Lavoro Contadino ("Peasant Work Places"), the rooms of which are scattered all around the town. Substantially there are eight rooms that present the work and life of the people of the Hyblaean Mountains, ranging from the workshops of the blacksmith, the cobbler, and the carpenter to the great troughs where the grapes were trodden and the olive-press where Gabriele Lavia filmed scenes in The She-Wolf", with Monica Guerritore, Raoul Bova, and Michele Placido. The visit continues in the "casa ro massaru" ("farmer's house), the typical home of a local small landowner, as might commonly belong to the middle belt of the peasant class in eastern Sicily. Inside, there are four rooms: the entrance, the kitchen with its stone fireplace, the weaving-room, where one can watch weaving in progress, and the bedroom, with the large double bed, the unique kind of cradle used in peasant families, the clothes, and the trousseau brought by the wife as her dowry.
